Trojans Cage Ramblers

  The Johnstown High School's Trojans chalked up their 15th straight win by beating the Windber High Ramblers to a score of 68-43. It was the fifth decision in Tri-County League play for Coach Paul Abele's skyscrapers and put them one game ahead of second place Westmont.
  The fifty-year-old Recreation Hall was filled to capacity 45 minutes before the feature contest began. The Rambler's faithful shook the building during the first 52 seconds as they stepped into a 3-0 lead. Less than a minute later the Trojans had the score deadlocked and it took less than another minute for them to move in front to stay.
  The Trojan's Paul Schmidt was the star of the game by caging seven goals and seven fouls for 21 points. Johnstown's Ron Rainey shared runner up honors with Windber's Joe Sendek. Each bagged 17 counters.
  Schmidt, Rainey and Jack Keelan dominated play off both boards. Johnstown garnered scoring edges in each quarter, grabbing their biggest margin in the final stanza, 16-8.
  After Ken Solden's side shot and Sendek's foul, the Ramblers had a 3-0 edge.
  Johnstown caged 10 straight points to show a 10-3 command after the first eight minutes.
  Rainey opened the scoring for the Trojans with a jump shot from the side and Keelan added a foul to even the score. Carl Sax put in a lay up; Schmidt followed with a foul; Homer Rice connected on a lay up, and then Keelan and Rice made fouls to round out the first-quarter scoring.
  The Trojans made six points in the first two minutes of the sec and quarter against two for Windber to hike their edge to 16 5. Johnstown copped the period by 22-15, hiking their halftime margin to 32-18.
  Windber made its best showing in the third quarter but still lost territory as the visitors took a 20-17 edge. This gave the Trojans a 17-point cushion, 52-35 going into the stretch heat. Johnstown scored 14 of its 16 points in the last period in succession before Rich De Polo posted the Rambler's final field goal.
  Each team lost one player on fouls. Solden went out at 1:54 of the fourth quarter. Sax followed 17 seconds later.
  Johnstown hit 26 times out of 64 tries and added 16 fouls on 25 chances. Windber's 16 field goals came on 57 attempts. The Ramblers missed only two out of 13 foul shots.
  Johnstown "B" team won the preliminary, 57-18.

  Waynesburg College in Greene County was one of the first two colleges to grant degrees to women.

Ramblers Defeat Bears

  The Windber High Ramblers defeated the Boswell Bears to a score of 32-12. The Ramblers won eight of their 11 bouts, losing one of the three by forfeit in the 103 pound class. The summaries:

Joseph Johns Downs Jr. High

  Joseph Johns won their second league game over Windber 40-21, in Recreation Hall. Both wins for Coach George Bellak's Lions were against the Ramblers.
  Ott and Benn topped the Bellakmen in scoring, each with 13 points. Ronny Vespa was high scorer for the Ramblers with 7 points. Joseph Johns converted six of 12 fouls while Windber made five of 14 attempts.

Athlete Of The Month

  Focus your eyes this way kids and note who's stepping in to claim the spotlight as Ahlete of the Month. Tommy Kanas is our man. He's a regular 302 guy and can
usually be seen with "Barb". To sit down to a meal of fried chicken, and listen to "From the Vine Came the Grape" would be tops with Tommy. Tom is 16 years old, 5 ft. 10 inches and weighs 175 pounds. He is blonde and always sports one of those "cool" crew cuts.
  His eyes are blue and so is his favorite color. Mr. Wingard is his favorite "gray-matter batter." Chemistry leads on his list of subjects. The Comedy Hour and Alan Ladd blend in on his entertainment favorites.
  As far as sports are concerned) football is his favorite. Tom played right guard on the Rambler Varsity this year. He played football and four years of high school, basketball and track while a freshman, and now he completes his sports career as a wrestler. He's been on the squad for three years.
  Tommy has recently tried out for an Annapolis Scholarship.

Windber Defeats Yellow Jackets

  Windber High's Ramblers beat the Yellow Jackets from Ferndale on their own floor by a score of 69-58.
  Ken Solden, Rambler center, led the way with his deadeye shooting. He experienced his biggest night in scholastic basketball by scoring 39 points on 18 field goals and 3 fouls. He picked up 16 points in the first half on 7 field goals and two fouls. In the second half he scored 23 points on 11 field goals and 1 foul.
  Ferndale carried the first period 14-7, and they were still leading at half time, 29-24. Windber outscored the Jackets by 22-13 in the third quarter to move ahead, 46-42 going into the last quarter. Windber then swept the final quarter 23-16, to capture their third league win.
  Four Yellow Jacket boys scored in the double figures with Wayne Klaum's 16 points being high. Windber was hot at the foul line, making 15 of 16 tries while Ferndale made 16 of 23 foul attempts.
  Ferndale won the junior varsity preliminary, 52-38.

10 Commandments Of Basketball

 1. Thou shalt have no other subject before basketball, even school.
 2. Thou shalt not take the name of the coach in vain, for only he who sitteth on the bench can do this. If he can "sit" at all.
 3. Remember, keep all Tuesdays and Fridays clean.
 4. Honor they referee that thy days may be long upon the basketball floor.
 5. Thou shalt not kill thy opponents. (Broken legs and arms are sufficient).
 6. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy referee.
 7. Thou shalt not commit any fouls in the presence of they referee.
 8. Thou shalt not be a gunner.
 9. Thou shalt not weep when thou losest. (Pulling hair is not permitted either).
 10. Thou shalt not covet another's first string position.

Ramblers Win Over Indiana

  Windber defeated Indiana 54-47 at the Recreation Hall on February 2.
  The visitors were ahead 12-8 at the end of the first quarter, but the Ramblers carried the other three quarters. Ken Solden and Joe Sendek led the winners with 20 and 1'6 points, respectively. McLauhlin was high scorer for the losers with 15 points.
  Coach Steve Kaplan's team made 16 to 26 points against 15 of 28 for Indiana. Windber grabbed a 47-45 win the preliminary. Varsity summary:

Francis Scores 113 Points

  In February 2, Bevo Francis scored 113 points as his Rio Garnde College basketball team walloped Hillsdale, Mich., 134-91.
  The unbelievable scoring feat was a new record for individual scoring for a small-college player. Bevo held the previous record with 84 points scored two weeks ago against Alliance College.
  In 19 games this season against four-year schools, the 20-year-old sophomore has accumulated 929 points, for an average of nearly 49 points per game.
  Bevo, with three tall men guarding him, had 43 points at half-time. After three quarters were over he had poured in 74 points as he hit on about 75 per cent of his shots.
